The Steep Cost of Following Christ_l
In today’s passages, we see people who say they want to follow Christ. But Jesus makes it clear to them, and us, that allegiance to Him is not cheap. There is a steep cost to following Christ.

He Took Our Illnesses and Bore Our Diseases
Matthew’s gospel is a historical account of the life and ministry of Jesus. Like the other gospel writers, Matthew generally follows a basic chronological order for the major events in Jesus’ life.  Yet in Matthew, as in the other gospels, many aspects of Jesus’ life and ministry are arranged in a topical order. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Matthew writes and arranges his gospel account for a very specific purpose: to show us that Jesus is the Sovereign King, the Messiah promised in the Old Testament, descending from the line of David and Abraham.

Are You Building on Solid Rock or Shifting Sand?
There is no mysterious hidden meaning in today’s passage. It is a parable about the person who hears the words of Jesus and wisely does them versus the person who hears the words of Jesus and foolishly ignores them. Like all of this section, Jesus is preparing us for the Day of Judgement. Just as it was for Israel, so it is for us: “choose this day” (Josh 24:15). Will you be a wise or foolish builder? Is your life built on solid rock or shifting sand? Will the structure of your life stand?
